For young drivers who are taking driving lessons or have recently passed their driving tests, it’s important to know a bit about the inside of the car itself. Having a basic familiarity with the vital organs of a car allows you to recognize early warning signs, and enables you to better maintain and take care of your vehicle. All new drivers should take a moment to understand some of the basic anatomy of a car.
- Oil and Fluids
In addition to the gasoline that powers a car, there are several important fluids that should be checked and maintained. Oil should be replaced at least every 3,000 miles, but it’s a good idea to check it periodically to make sure it isn’t unexpectedly low. You should keep a close eye on Brake fluid and power steering fluid. - Important Parts
Although most parts on a car are very important, some do the bulk of the work. Examples include the battery, brakes, engine, transmission and suspension. Driving school may teach you how to turn, park, and negotiate traffic, but students should know some basic car skills, like how to jump-start a battery, feel when the brakes seem weak, or recognize when to replace tires. - Signs of Trouble
When you notice something odd while driving, it’s important to understand what your car may be telling you. Steering issues may be caused by low power steering fluid, the steering belt, or old tires. You should have your brakes checked if you notice that they “grab” with just a little pressure, or feel like they “drag.” Brakes may feel week due to low brake fluid or worn brake pads.

We have been thrilled with Adams School of Driving. We have an older child and used another company for his lessons. This time when I went to search options for my twins, you offered so many more classes, so I decided to use Adams and it has been terrific. Older drivers may be familiar with the mantra “mirror, signal, maneuver,” but the idea of scanning rear and side view mirrors while driving can be confusing for young or inexperienced drivers. Fortunately, all it takes is a few driving lessons here at Adams School of Driving to learn how to properly use your vehicle’s mirrors. Some of the mirror skills and techniques you will learn during your driving lessons include:
- Using Side Mirrors
It’s possible to adjust your side-view mirrors in such a way that you will never get blind-sided by an approaching car. Side-view mirrors are predominately used when changing lanes and merging into traffic, but there is never a bad time to scan your side view mirrors. Your Adams School of Driving instructor will teach you when and how to use your side view mirrors and how to adjust them before hitting the road. - Using the Rear Mirror
Any driving instructor will tell you that using the rear view mirror should become a habit, but only the really good driving instructors will be able to teach you how to check your rear view mirror without taking your eyes off the road. This may sound confusing (and impossible to do), but our driving instructors will teach you how to glance at your rear view mirror while you are driving so you can avoid a collision in front and behind of you. - Active Scanning and Highway Driving
Driving becomes second nature after a very short amount of time behind the wheel. But if you want stay safe on the road, you will need to actively scan between your rear and side view mirrors while driving to keep an eye on the cars and activity around you. Active scanning is particularly important when driving on the highway, where high speeds, quick maneuvers, and heavy traffic makes it necessary to constantly use your mirrors to avoid an accident.
