Vital Car Safety Maintenance
Driving lessons offer you either an introduction or a refresher course to basic safety measures behind the wheel. It’s important to understand that safety doesn’t just apply to what you do behind the wheel, however. Your safety also largely depends on maintenance of pivotal parts of your car. Before you drive around the block or around the country, ensure that the following safety maintenance measures have been taken.
- Brake Repair: A properly functioning brake system can make the difference between life and death. Regularly check your brakes regardless of whether something appears wrong. When brakes begin to chirp, squeak, scrape, or grind, you’ll want to have your braking system checked. Bad brakes can also cause noticeable vibrations in the steering wheel. If any of these common signs occur, have your brakes checked—you may need new brake pads or rotors.
- Tire Inspection: Underinflated, worn out, and balding tires are a leading cause of preventable accidents out on the road. To complicate the situation, underinflated tires are often not noticeable to the untrained eye. Regularly rotating and balancing your tires will improve safety, increase your car’s lifespan, and save gas. Check that they’re properly inflated every time you drive.
- Alignment Adjustment: Wheel alignment ensures that the wheels of a car are both perpendicular to the road and parallel to one another. A car that constantly pulls itself to one side is extremely dangerous and difficult to maneuver. If your steering wheel is vibrating nonstop or you’re having issues handling your car, get your alignment checked. Doing so will improve handling and keep you safe from preventable disaster.
