A Sense of Calm and Control: What is Defensive Driving

Last updated 1 year ago

Driving is the modern age’s equivalent of a rite of passage.  The sense of liberation and elation for a new driver is one of life’s milestones.

This excitement is only matched by the sense of dread in their loved ones as they watch the most cherished person in their lives innocently venture into a world of speeding multi-ton machines being operated by distracted or impaired drivers.

The one thing that can give the reasonable driver an advantage is the knowledge and execution of defensive driving

“What,” you might ask to be cooperative, “is defensive driving?”

Defensive driving, simply put, is the art and science of “driving to save lives, time, and money,” according to the driving school bible “Safe Practices for Motor Vehicle Operations.”

Typical teen driving, for instance, consists of cell phones, elation, talking, and blazing by everyone in the fast lane.  This kind of driving will:

  • Endanger themselves and everyone within 100 yards of them.
  • Give the mechanic more business
  • Burn through many dollars of polluting fuel
  • Not result in getting to where they’re going any faster.

They aren’t practicing calm, controlled defensive driving.  The only things they will get faster are:

  • A hospital visit and/or a funeral
  • A wait at a timed red light
  • A view of the rear bumper of the next vehicle
  • A more expensive insurance payment.

The methodical, knowledgeable drivers practice defensive driving and know this.

How does a teen pass a school driving test?  How does someone learn the art of defensive driving?  How can one shave a bundle off their car insurance?  The key is attending driving school, of course.

The lessons drivers learn at driving school are invaluable.  Training driving students is an art in itself and demands a patient, wise professional.   The best place in the Highland Park, Northbrook, Hoffman Estates, Buffalo Grove and Morton Grove areas of Illinois to learn defensive driving is at Adams School of Driving, at 6040 Dempster, Morton Grove, Il 60053.  Learn more about how we can help your teen become a safe and successful driver today!
